Why we choose flower farming: Is it the beautiful pursuit you imagined?
“How would you describe flower farming in one word?”
This was the question posed in The Beautiful Pursuit, a new documentary film series produced by Floret Flowers. Answers ranged from chaos to exhilarating, empowering to intense. The reality? It’s all of these—and more.
Flower farming isn’t just a job—it’s a calling. It’s a life shaped by the rhythm of the seasons, the unpredictability of nature, and the quiet determination to keep going, even when the odds are stacked against us.
Watching The Beautiful Pursuit felt like seeing my own journey reflected back at me. The struggles. The doubts. The sheer, stubborn belief that this work matters. And the relentless hope that keeps me sowing, planting, and harvesting.
The Many Paths to Flower Farming
No two flower farmers take the same road to get here. Some of us grew up with our hands in the dirt, gardening alongside grandparents. Others spent years—or decades—in careers that never quite fit, only to discover, sometimes by accident, that growing flowers was what we were meant to do.
The documentary highlights these diverse paths. A lawyer who traded courtrooms for compost. A climate policy worker who found more impact in the soil than in meeting rooms. A wedding and events organiser whose business collapsed in 2020 and turned to flowers to find joy again. Each story is different, but the common thread is undeniable: a desire to create something real, meaningful, and lasting.
Many of us came to flower farming not because it was the obvious choice, but because it was the right one. Because we wanted a business that felt aligned with our values. Because we wanted our work to be an act of defiance against burnout, waste, and outdated industry norms. Because once you dream the dream, as one farmer in the documentary says, it’s hard to un-dream it.
The Hard Truths: What It Really Takes
There’s a reason many people don’t stick with flower farming long-term. The work is backbreaking, the weather is ruthless, and the financial juggling act is constant. The Beautiful Pursuit doesn’t shy away from this. Farmers in the documentary speak candidly about being battered by hail, losing entire crops, and feeling the weight of running a farm while also caring for children, partners, and themselves.
These stories resonate because they are real. The late nights and early mornings. The hard choices—whether to invest in infrastructure or save for next season’s seeds. The exhaustion of explaining, yet again, that yes, flowers are a real business. And yet, despite it all, we persist.
Why We Keep Going: Beauty, Purpose, and Impact
If flower farming were just about making money, most of us would have quit by now. But we don’t, because we know this work is bigger than us.
Flower farming is a paradox—the hardest work many of us have ever done, yet the most rewarding. It pushes us to our limits, then fills us with awe. Flowers transform people. We see it in our customers—the way their faces soften when they see our seasonal blooms. We see it in ourselves, too. In the deep sense of pride in sharing our flowers with our community. In the way flowers tether us to the seasons, the soil, and something greater than ourselves.
For many, flower farming isn’t just about growing stems—it’s about creating a new way of doing business. One that prioritises sustainability, creativity, and community over hustle culture and bottom-line-only thinking. It’s about proving that there’s a place for small-scale, seasonal flower farms in an industry dominated by imports and mass production.
The title of Floret’s documentary is perfect—The Beautiful Pursuit. Because even on the hardest days, flower farming is part of something beautiful.
Final Reflection: What’s Your Why?
As The Beautiful Pursuit reminds us, flower farming is an act of both perseverance and hope.
So, we want to ask you: What drew you to this work? What keeps you going, even in the hardest seasons?
Drop a comment or share your story—we’d love to hear it. Because no matter how different our journeys are, we’re all in this together.
